Switzerland: IOC President Thomas Bach announces COVID-19 counter-measures for Tokyo 2020

Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the official COVID-19 counter-measures set up for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, during an online press conference held from Lausanne, on Monday. Bach explained that, in partnership with a task force from Tokyo 2020, the IOC had created a series of guidelines for both athletes and their respective National Olympic Committees (NOCs). Both athletes and NOCs «should adopt their arrival and departure policies to ensure that athletes can arrive at the Olympic village five days prior to the start of their competition, and depart maximum two days after their completion of competition,» Bach said, adding, «Exceptions to these will be considered subject to certain sport-specific criteria. Always well-balanced, these counter-measures with the athletes’ experience.» Bach stressed that the measures are ‘absolutely necessary’ as they need to reduce the number of residents in the Olympic village, in order ‘to minimise the risk of COVID exposure.’ At the same time, the IOC president explained they wanted to ‘maintain the athletes’ experience,’ finding a well-balanced plan to have the Olympic games while securing all participants’ safety. ©IOC.
